3 Helpful Apps for Working with Color

May 3, 2026 Beatrice Perron Dahlen

My last post walked through ways to use the color wheel to help choose colors in knitting. I realize it may be a lot to digest, so I wanted to share some apps that are a great place to start getting ideas for color combinations. All of these have free options. Download and start playing to get lots of ideas!! Don’t forget to consider VALUE though (more in my last post). This is when you have a range of light and dark colors. This can be tricky to see when you are looking at different colors, so using your black and white filter on the camera app on a phone is a great way to do this. (Check my last post for more details.)

  1. Pinterest - Pinterest has TONS of ideas for colors. Just enter into the search bar something like “Bright Color Combinations” or “Fall Colors” and you will find tons of color options. Check out my two boards Knitting with Color and Color for ideas.

  2. Coolers - This is a really, really fun app to play with. You can just tap the screen to keep showing you different color combinations. You can set this to only show you certain types of combinations like Analogous or Complimentary (see my previous post). Something that is really cool though, is pulling colors from a photo. Click the three little dots on the bottom > choose Other Tools > and choose either of these options to work from a photo on your phone. The “Create Collage” option creates an image like the one above, while the “Pick Colors from Image” option lets you change the colors from your image.

  3. Pocket Color Wheel - I mentioned this in the last post, but this is a great app to have for any crafter who has found themselves in a store overwhelmed with choices.

Download any of these apps to start exploring! Have fun!! And do let me know how it’s going!
